Groups & Workshops

With Sue Rickards

Sue offers several day, weekend and residential workshops throughout the year. She also currently offers two ongoing groups for those who wish to take their dance practice deeper within the setting of a closed group.

'Being in groups allows something marvelous, mysterious

and at times gloriously ordinary to happen.'

And The Beat Goes On

With Sue Rickards, supported by Angela Griffiths, 5R and OpenFloor teacher, and Ruth Hirst, 5R and Soul

Motion teacher

'I have found so many pieces of myself through the direct experience of being in 'and the beat goes on…'

I never even knew how precious I was, or how much I needed to hear the word Welcome,

over and over and over again, until my cells and bones believed the truth of it…'

And The Beat Goes On is an ongoing group intended to accompany us through our lives, creating the possibility of spacious dancing support over a period of time.  We’re building a community of dancers who are willing to practice dancing deeply, playfully and seriously, seeking to expand our ability to be spontaneous, honest, responsible and real – alive in our bodies, courageous and true in our hearts and generous and receptive in our minds.  We move and dance and we also use words and other means of expression to explore and share more about ourselves.

We’re creating a place to try things out, to play and work together, to make mistakes and discoveries.  We mess up – and mess in, dancing with our fears and fantasies, simplicities and shames, strengths and weaknesses as we find ways to be more responsible and free. We can learn, sometimes exhilaratingly quickly, sometimes painfully slowly, to accept ourselves more and to see ourselves and one another with increasing respect and pleasure.  Many of us were born into a group, most were in school in a group, and we often work or live in a group.  Many of us sometimes feel isolated from and in groups – so in ATBGO we get myriad opportunities to practice dancing in a group with all our ordinariness and extraordinariness, being challenged and supported by the tribe we create.

Each term we begin with a weekend together, followed by five evenings.  Spaces are limited but do come up regularly.  New people are invited to join at the beginning of each term.  A commitment of two terms is required to begin, which may be extended, term by term, indefinitely. My intention is for this to be a group that can change and continue, available as an ongoing presence in our lives, enabling us to explore our relationship with ourselves, in one to one and in tribe, using the movement as our bedrock.

Sure Heart's Release

Sat/Sun 30/31st May 2020

Sue Rickards (5R & Open Floor) & Stephan Bodian

Somers Town Sports Centre, 134 Chalton St, London, NW1 1RX

In this nonresidential weekend retreat, we will explore the interface between sitting and movement, silence and sound, spiritual insight and awakened activity. For dancers, it can be an opportunity to shine the light of awareness on the question, Who’s dancing? Or even deeper, who am I? For awakeners, it’s a chance to experiment with embodying your insight in the provocative, sometimes chaotic world of form. And for everyone, it’s a space in which to deepen our connection with ourselves and one another at every level.

Sue and Stephan, who will be collaborating for the first time, will weave together interludes of expressive dance, guided meditation and inquiry, and potent pointers and teachings from the nondual wisdom of Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta. The weekend promises to be lively, deep, spontaneous, unpredictable—and fun!

Sue

From working in offices and bars and hitchhiking everywhere I somehow fell into dance; 5Rhythms and Conscious Movement, and 6 years ago I helped to found Open Floor International. Along the way I've been exploring what it is to be awake in a moving body and a wild tender heart--such messy marvellous things--by being part of Movement of Being and having excellent teachers. I'm keen to work alongside Stephan; I have a sense this weekend will be good for my soul.

Stephan

I’ve been teaching spiritual awakening (if such a thing is possible!) for many years and dancing 5Rhythms for almost as long. Dance has been a nourishing complement to waking up for me, an opportunity to drop into the body, surrender to the movement, and just let it happen as it will. I heard about Sue when I taught in London last summer and we immediately hit it off and found ourselves readily aligning on how to work together. I look forward to sharing our creative collaboration with you!

A Certain Freedom #2 - Past

Sat 19th of October

Sue Rickards (5R & Open Floor) & Caroline Thompson (Feldenkrais Method)

Brickworks Community Centre, Crouch Hill, N4 4BY, LONDON

... to think in movement and move beyond thought

This is the second day-long collaboration between Sue and Caroline exploring two complimentary paths through movement to discover a certain freedom.

When we practise A Call to Dance we are invited to let go of focusing on our mind, with the endless chatter about past and future, and instead drop into the present moment, where we can relate to ourselves, others and the music in new and fresh ways. Open Floor and 5Rhythms offer maps into expressing ourselves with a certain freedom.

With Feldenkrais, the approach is to quieten our moving selves towards slow, subtle and very specific movements. In this way, we amplify our awareness, thereby noticing how we habitually move, think and feel, bringing this into the

realm of the conscious. With this awareness comes more choice.

In this workshop we will explore the relationship between the head, neck and eyes and how this affects our breathing, posture, dancing and thinking.

No experience of dance or Feldenkrais is necessary, while experience in either or both is equally welcome. Everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace - to have a certain freedom to move and rest as it makes sense to each of us.

Saturday 19th October 2019, 11-6pm (£70)

Already Alright - Past

Orval, Belgium, 2019: 4th - 9th August

with Sue Rickards, supported by Frie Lavelli, Kath Jones, Imraan Ismail

Already Alright is a summer retreat and gathering.

An annual resource to find what's ready to be explored, healed, expressed, let go, integrated and enjoyed.

This week is both personal for each of us, and supported by our coming together. We dance deeply and in doing so create space to be curious, relaxed, excited and surprised by what is actually ready to emerge and be included. Feeling broken or scared, worthless or worthy, excited or lost or hopelessly happy - what if it can all be welcomed, danced and explored? What if we don't need to know in advance what we need or what might happen? This simple yet radical view can change everything.

Connected to ourselves and each other, we can find ourselves uninterested in thinking there is something wrong with us. We change channels. We can stop fighting the under- lying fear that we are not truly ok and so relax and become available to delight and spa- ciousness. Freedom and freshness come through us, sometimes when we least expect it.

Each year we build confidence in what's ready to emerge. Fresh each year, and a result of all our years of dancing together, this Annual Retreat and Gathering helps us to keep remembering the value of our unique contributions, our curiosity and our Alrightness.

Newcomers very very welcome, and Oldtimers as welcome as ever.

A winter closed group with Sue Rickards

FIRE is happening again! A winter closed group with Sue Rickards, happening over three weekends, including a residential back at the very special Earth Spirit Centre in Somerset, where Hilary Kneale will lead the fire ceremony.

This group calls to that in us which is not entirely satisfied by the artificial light of devices or tv and instead wants the heat of real fire, real company and real aliveness.

We gather in nature by a blazing FIRE and let it speak to us as we listen to our own nature. We use FIRE as a metaphor as we dance, enchanted by stories and song. We dance a lot – vigorously and languorously, steady and wild, as each moment takes us invoking mystery to choreograph our time together.

We make friends.

In the optional Sweat Lodge Ceremony we can offer our prayers, for ourselves and the world, to the night sky.

This is the third gathering of FIRE, as we congregate through the dark winter months, and enrich our imagination and lives throughout the year.

Held by Sue, with Hilary Kneale holding the fire ceremonies hilarykneale.com.

The Extraordinary Intelligence of Not Knowing - Past

Antwerp, Belgium: 23-24 March 2019

with Sue Rickards - A Dance Enquiry

Knowing things is useful and necessary. I like my doctor to know the symptoms of measles when she sees them. I like knowing where I live - it saves me searching for my flat every time I want to go home.

Not Knowing is a state that we can sometimes be afraid of, but it's a doorway to access the vast, truthful wild Intelligence that belongs to us all, and we belong to it. It's this Intelligence that we are going to attend to. It's simple and subtle and can help us live so much more freely and fully.

'Let go of certainty. The opposite isn't uncertainty.

It's openers, curiosity and a willingness to embrace paradox.'

Gathering through the dark winter months we turn towards each other and the

fire to feed our imaginations...

This is a call to trade in the weak glow of television and devices for the heat and blaze of a real fire, untamed dances and deep stories.

The rich flickering flames of the FIRE, the drum and the dance call us into the creative core of who we really are.

The ashes remind us of where we will return.

The time between and the deep dark of the lodge speak to us of our belonging.

A Certain Freedom - Past

With Sue Rickards and Caroline Thompson

Saturday 9th Feb 2019, 11am-6pm

One day workshop in London

Brickworks Community Centre, 42 Crouch Hill, N4 4BY

A Weaving of the Feldenkrais Method & Open Floor Dance Practice

A day exploring two complementary paths through movement

… to discover a certain freedom

  • We’ll slow down and pay attention to our habits through simple movement studies.

  • We’ll change pace with music and guidance to warm up into our dancing selves.

  • Then we’ll freely follow the threads of our interest to see what we can be surprised by.

  • There will be space for movement and rest, with art materials as optional resources.

Perhaps we’ll find more ease and energy.

We have a hunch this is going to be fun.

No experience of dance, Feldenkrais, art or exploring needed.

No particular kind of body or experience required.

Come as you are and we’ll start from there.

Caroline will bring her teaching of the Feldenkrais Method, a precise, gentle and

respectful way to loosen habits that might no longer serve us and open us to new

ways of moving and being.

Sue will support us to drop any ideas of right or wrong and to explore more freely

as we relate to ourselves and each other.

Caroline Thompson is a Feldenkrais Method Practitioner who delights in the freedom

this method can bring. She is also a lifetime dancer and has been dancing the 5Rhythms with Sue for 20 years. Both Sue and Caroline are excited to be offering this new collaboration and exploration.

Already Alright - Past

Orval, Belgium, 2018: 5th - 10th August

with Sue Rickards

Already Alright is a summer retreat and gathering.

It is very personal for each of us and yet we are supported by our coming together.  It is offered as an annual resource to find what's already ready to be explored, healed, expressed, let go, welcomed and enjoyed.  And therefore we can rest into not trying to hurry a plant to grow, an acorn to be an oak, an egg to be a chicken.  Instead we have space and support to be curious, relaxed, excited, surprised by what is ready to emerge and be included.

And we can include ourselves and each other however we are ‚– a radical view that can change everything.  Feeling broken or scared, worthless or worthy, excited or lost or hopelessly happy ‚– what if it can all be welcomed, danced and explored?  What if we don't need to know in advance what we need or what might happen?

In this way, connected to ourselves and each other, we can undermine the cultural currency that says there is something wrong with us.  The advertising and self improvement that can subtly suggests we are not quite enough. Together and with perhaps with ease we question the underlying fear that we are somehow, somewhere, in some way wrong or not ok.

Together we build a growing confidence

- In what's ready to be seen, what's ready to emerge
- In the value of our unique contributions to our togetherness
- In our spirit of curiosity and feeling of alrightness
- In ourselves and what we create, fresh each year
- In the wonder of life happening through us

We create for ourselves and offer one another this annual

retreat and resource in our wild and precious lives.

Oldtimers as welcome as ever, and newcomers very

welcome too.

The Extraordinary Intelligence of Not Knowing - Past

Antwerp, Belgium 2018: 10 - 11 March

with Sue Rickards - Open Floor Group

There is a lot of power in knowing things and it's useful and necessary. I like my doctor to know the symptoms of measles when she sees them. I like knowing where I live; it saves time searching for my flat every time I want to go home. I'm glad my friends know how to cook. I'd like to know how to speak Spanish... And -

Let’s spend the winter together, in each other’s company, for the fun and connection and aliveness of it. Don’t we all know that it’s challenging and delightful and healthy to hang loose together and see what we create? Our collective creativity, which none of us can do alone. Don’t we need each other? Don’t we benefit from taking this leap, again and again?

What if we really are all connected? From the sweet butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-our-mouth-ness to the knifewielding desperado-ness of us all. The good the bad the ugly, all connected. The wonderful the terrible the terrorist the timid the taken, all connected. The human the inhuman the non human: the frogs the birds the trees the water, all connected.

Dancing and expanding our capacity to be relational; to ourselves, to one another, to the world – and to our souls (our personal mischievous Pan and winged messenger; our receiver and interpreter of the transpersonal; the brilliance beyond our brains).

Dropping into a congregation of dancers, not knowing where we will take each other. And listening, somehow, through our time bound mortal selves to something more

timeless.

Already Alright - Past

Orval, Belgium, 2017: 30th July - 4th August

with Sue Rickards - A residential right beside the forest.

I invite you to come with the assumption that we will find out together what needs to happen. I will bring, of course, all the experience of my ripe old age; all the trainings and learnings, interests and enthusiasm. I’ll bring material to work with and explore.

We’ll dance and dance and rest and play. And rather than try to fix anything or improve ourselves, let’s assume that whatever state we are in, we are Already Alright. That’s a Big Radical Assumption. It can change everything. We see our situation, ourselves and each other from a different perspective.

So that feeling broken or scared or excited or lost or wild or hopelessly happy is all already alright, it’s part of everything. Feeling worthless and worthy and willing or unwilling – anything really – can be welcomed, danced, explored and investigated without worrying about the outcome.

Then healing might happen but maybe not the healing we have on our lists, and instead whatever’s ready to heal. And we might grow, with whatever is already ready to flourish. And even, maybe, what needs shaking will get it’s shake. Shall we not bother trying to know in advance?

We will be in good company.  We congregate, dance and explore. Not exploring with an aim to increase our power or improve our communication, find our inner child or mend our broken heart. That’s like exploring along a particular path. Let’s unfold the whole map. Lets show up just as we are, from moment to moment, dance to dance and see what’s ready to emerge of it’s own accord and what to appreciate and value about ourselves and each other, just as we are.

Bring On The Wonder

Orval, Bois Le Comte, Belgium  31st July - 5th August 2016 - Past

5 day with Sue Rickards, assisted by Frie Lavelli and Luc de Cuyper

We all know the feeling of finding something wonderful. It's a universal pleasure to look in wonder at a sunset or listen in wonder to an amazing piece of music. Yet in daily life our sense of wonder might go unnoticed or overlooked and our lives might seem duller or smaller because of it. This summer we can give this very simple thing - this sensation of wonder - some space. Of course we won't force anything or pretend anything. And yet if we can give some attention to this simple thing, make space for it, our relationships with ourselves and with each other can become more wonderful.

It maybe even simpler than that - perhaps we and each other are already wonderful - and this summer we might be able to strengthen our ability to notice and appreciate what is already true.

And though it might be simple, and sound simple, that doesn't mean it's nesecarily easy. It can take courage and a willingness to be messy, to see things afresh and respond afresh. To loosen some habits and to allow ourselves to be surprising to ourselves and to each other, for the wonder to come through more easily.

We know we will be in good company as we gather to explore, each of us bringing something unique to the dance floor.  For more info and booking please visit:  http://owc.be/137/en?courseid=743
